Steve Bates in THE PEOPLE reports that England stars back under-fire Manager McClaren.
England's senior stars will this week launch a player-power campaign aimed at saving Steve McClaren's neck. McClaren faces the axe if England fail to qualify for Euro 2008 - and they will be out if Russia win in Israel on Saturday - but high-profile stars like David Beckham, Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Sol Campbell and Joe Cole want McClaren to stay in charge no matter what the outcome of the Euro qualifying campaign. And senior FA figures are ready to lend weight to the "Keep Mac campaign". The plan is to convince fans that McClaren has the full backing of the squad - and head off a massive backlash by punters if England don't go through.
An FA insider said: "Everyone is willing Steve to succeed and there is a strong case for him to stay even if England don't qualify."
England will play Austria in a friendly on Friday evening at the Ernst Happel Stadium, Vienna. This stadium is going to host the final of the Euro '08.
Will England return to Vienna next year?
