RAPIDHAMMER: Au Weh in Wembley!

Thursday 22 November 2007

Au Weh in Wembley!

"For England it is goodnight Vienna, goodbye Geneva."

There is no non-Englishman who loves your guys more than I do but there are good players in small countries as well."
BBC:
"It was what Croatia deserved for a display full of enterprise and heart - and what England deserved for one of their most inept displays in living memory.
The result, coupled with Russia's slender 1-0 win over Andorra, means England will not be going to next summer's tournament in Austria and Switzerland.

Full-time: England 2 Croatia 3
It's all over for England as the boos ring out at Wembley. It was a terrible performance from the hosts despite their two goals. Croatia looked like a team that knew what they were doing and England didn't. It's devastating. Peter Crouch was the only England player who performed to anywhere near his best. The other ten need to have a long hard look in the mirror.
It looks over for McClaren. His team were second best in every department and didn't settle into any consistent pattern of play. At 2-2 you would expect England to tighten up defensively, but they were carved up again and again by Croatia's intelligent passing and movement. The performance puts a severe dent in the England coach's reputation.
