Bad Spirit Diffused: McGarvey Hails Rapid Supporters

FRANK McGARVEY praised Rapid Vienna and labelled them a credit to football.

The former Celtic striker had been damning in his verdict of the Austrians in the build-up to the Parkhead clash but admitted Peter Pacult's side can leave Scotland without a stain on their character.
He said: "I felt it was a terrific game of football which was played out in a fantastic spirit.

"I have spoken a lot in the build-up to this game about what happened 25 years ago but tonight was all about two teams going at each other, which was great to see.

"I was in Glasgow earlier in the day and they conducted themselves superbly with a great sense of humour.

"I didn't get the apology I wanted but I want the Rapid fans to know they are welcome back in Glasgow whenever they want. A draw was a fair result as Rapid are a quality side although Shaun Maloney and Aiden McGeady were both excellent for Celtic and could have turned the tide.

"There are so many positives to take from the evening and when Rapid scored first my heart was at my ankles, although Scott McDonald's goal had me jumping about more than anybody in the stadium.

"I realise that Austrian fans will have a negative impression of me but I want to go on record just how magnificent they were all night and they made for a terrific atmosphere.

"Celtic gave everything they had and I didn't get the win I was after.

"I have to put my hands up and concede that Rapid were a credit to their country."

"For Rapid it was a well earned point, and who can actually go back to Austria with their heads held up high as under manager Pacult, they never resorted to the same antics as their predecessors did in 1984. The travelling support were in fine form, from the moment they stripped off at the waist before kick off to when they were back on the coaches outside the ground. Singing and chanting for the full 90 minutes they certainly put the home support to shame and most fans across Europe this season also. They even had a wee dig of their own with the banner, ‘Oi Jimmy do you have any whisky left!’ A loose translation of course."
